Stan Lee named 9th Most Influential Celebrity

stan-leeForbes has published a list of the most influential celebrities of 2014 and ranked Stan Lee among a pretty big list of names, including Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese. Lee is of course famous for having created many of the most iconic superheroes of all time and a plethora of others, many of whom are topping the box office in feature film adaptations. And though Lee has long since left Marvel and his creations behind, he remains their greatest cheerleader and has remained in the public eye with his oft memorable cameos.

Agent Carter to air on ABC?

1017391_10151992664935808_575649589_nWhile it’s not yet confirmed, reports are surfacing that the next Marvel TV project, Agent Carter may be headed to ABC. This isn’t a shocker given that the network and Marvel Studios are both owned by Disney and have a pre-existing relationship. What is exciting is that Marvel is developing a little more diversity in their efforts to bring more characters into the live action realm.

Some fans have noted that there is an abundant lack of female and racial representation in the projects Marvel has been bringing to life. And while it’s true we have yet to have an announcement about there being are female or POC characters on the big screen, Marvel is moving forward at least a little in a couple different avenues.

First is the Agent Carter TV series, which is currently in development and has brought in Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas (creators of the CW series Reaper) to help construct the show. The series will center around the adventures of Agent Peggy Carter, the female lead from Captain America The First Avenger, presumably after the events of that film.

Elsewhere Marvel continues to develop their Netflix deal to bring four 12 episode mini-series to life, culminating in the Avengers like team-up mini-series the Defenders. The characters they will develop are Iron Fist, Daredevil (re-acquired from Fox), Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Jessica Jones is the story of a teenaged female superhero who retires young and becomes a reporter covering the superhuman events in New York City and gets pulled back into the world of heroes again. Luke Cage meanwhile is one of the most recognized POC superheroes in the Marvel Universe. He debuted during the low-budget blaxploitation era in the 1970s and went on to become an Avenger and mainstay hero. He is often associated with his superhero business, Heroes For Hire, that he runs with partner Iron Fist.

Granted none of these are feature stories akin to Marvel Avengers franchise, but it’s at least a step in the right direction. And with more unannounced films  slated until 2021 one can hope that perhaps a (long rumoured) Black Panther or Ms/Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) could be two of those.

The Lost Fantastic Four Film Documentary Trailer

Fantastic_Four_1994_PosterBefore the abysmal Fox film about Marvel’s First Family, there are was an even more disastrous version. In 1994, famous B-Movie producer Roger Corman, was overseeing an effort to bring to life the Fantastic Four. It was low-budget, it was schlocky and it was laughably awful, and it was never meant to see the light of day. The only reason the film exists is because they wanted to retain the rights to the franchise and had to move forward with production, with the intention of revisiting the franchise properly. Problem was that no one in the crew realized this and, bless their hearts, they tried to make a serious movie. The end result is legendarily awful, and buried in annals of history. For years the only way to see the film was to buy a bootleg at comic conventions, and even then the copy had gone through several generations and degraded so badly it was nearly unwatchable.

But to this day people still talk about the movie, fans still seek it out to witness for themselves, the history has become legend. And now someone has put together a documentary chronicling what happened!

Marvel Confirms – Peter Parker to Return to Comics

Marvel has officially announced that Peter Parker will be returning to his own series The Amazing Spider-Man in April 2014.

allnewmarvelnowpreviews3 (1)Earlier this week we talked about a solicit for the first issue of a series called Amazing Spider-Man #1. It would be the return of the series that was canceled at the end of 2012 during the early stages of Marvel’s Marvel NOW campaign that saw drastic changes made to many books in their line up. It also marked the end of Peter Parker as the Amazing Spider-Man as his consciousness was replaced with that of a dying Otto Octavius (formerly Doctor Octopus). For that last year Otto has served as the Superior Spider-Man, a new title that features him living Peter’s life in Peter’s body and turning heads as a more driven and more drastic hero.

But with the leak of the Marvel’s preview book, that tells retailers and fans about upcoming books  in their line up, featured a maskless Spider-Man swinging along smiling widely. There is no question that the body is that of Peter Parker. The question that remained was who was in control of that body. Truly the smile would be out of character for the curmudgeonly Octavius, but after more than a year’s absence, everyone wondered what could possibly bring Peter back.

While that question hasn’t been answered, we do have word from Marvel that indeed it will be Peter Parker, mind, body and web-shooters.

Now if only they would resurrect Ultimate Peter Parker too.

Episode 44 – Year in Review (2013)

Synopsis: In this episode Errol, Manda and Ja-Mez sit down to talk about the best and the worst in geek culture in 2013, including Movies, Video Games, Comics and more.

Technical Note: As we acknowledge we had an error a few minutes into the episode we had a problem with the broadcast. People in the chat were reporting a buzzing sound and Ja-Mez wanted to test the audio. Somehow when turning on the player it killed our broadcast. We had assumed that Audicity was still recording the raw episode, but when Ja-Mez went back to edit the episode he discovered that the test killed the recording as well. So nothing before Errol’s restart (that you hear that the beginning of the episode) exists, this is the episode in it’s entirety. 🙁
